prof.dr. (M.P.) Marko Hekkert

Marko Hekkert (1971) is Director of the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, full professor of Dynamics of Innovations Systems and head of Innovation Studies at Utrecht University.

Marko Hekkert Career

  • Currently he supervises projects on the behavior of incumbent actors in energy innovation, sustainable business models, institutional entrepreneurship, and further development of the Technological Innovation Systems framework.
  • Marko is in advisory boards of PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, “Green minds”, and ‘de Groene Zaak”, steering group member of Sustainable Transitions Research Network, member of the editorial board of Technological Forecasting & Social Change.


  • 2000 Utrecht University, Ph.D. in Energy and Material Systems Modeling
  • 1995 Utrecht University, Master’s degree in Chemistry
